Details have emerged about the 8-year-old child who survived when a bus carrying 45 passengers to Moria for Easter crashed.

On March 28, 46 passengers left Molepolole. They were on their way to Moria in GaMokwane, Polokwane, for an Easter celebration hosted by the Zion Christian Church. The Botswana-registered bus then approached the Ga-Mmamatlakala area on the R518 road in Waterberg District, Limpopo.

At the bridge, the driver lost control of the large vehicle, causing it to drift off the road and collide with the bridge barricade. The bus crashed 50 metres into the ravine. It exploded into a huge flame after colliding with the rocks beneath the bridge.

The Moria tragedy killed almost everyone on the bus, including the driver, and burned several of them beyond recognition. By Friday, 34 remains had been discovered, with only nine identified.

Only one person survived the tragic event, an eight-year-old girl who is currently receiving treatment in a Limpopo hospital.

Lauryn Siako, eight years old, is the only one who survived the disaster.

According to Thilivhali Muavha, a spokesperson for Limpopo Province’s main health official, emergency personnel discovered Lauryn outside the bus with minor cuts on her arms, legs, head, and back.

Lauryn persuaded her mother to join her grandmother on the Easter pilgrimage, which had resumed after a COVID-19 suspension. On Wednesday night, the two joined 43 other St. Engenas Zion Christian Church members in departing Molepolole for Moria. A few hours later, the 8-year-old was the only surviving passenger on the bus.

Her mother, Gaolebale Siako, shed tears as she asked, “How did she get off the bus?” It’s difficult to explain. I am saddened to have lost my mother and others, but I am also relieved that my child is still alive.”

Authorities remain perplexed as to how Lauryn survived the horrific incident. She gave South African officials viral information about the disaster. According to the New York Times, she gave them information about the bus’s origin and destination, as well as her mother’s contact information.
